You try changing a few settings on your digital camera but the result doesn't seem to be improved. I know what you might be thinking? If I only had a better digital camera like the new Canon EOS 7D or Nikon D5000. But would this really make a difference?

Without knowing your exact digital camera specifications I cannot answer 100% but my experience with digital camera photography would suggest that the camera does not make the shot, the photographer does.

So then, how can you become the digital photography master that you crave to be? I recommend a few good tips and a great course to provide a reference to provide all the secret details that the professional photographer knows.

1.       Megapixels -Megapixels in at least the 5 to 6mp range provide the best solution for a family digital photographer that may take that perfect shot and want to blow it up. Megapixels higher then 6mp are great but might be over-kill for the usual digital photographer and should not be the most important consideration in a digital camera purchase. Keep in mind that a photographer that takes a blurry image would do so no matter what mega pixel camera he is using. This verifies the importance of learning the functions of your camera and adding photography tips and possibly a photography course.  Knowing what to put in the view finder is twice as important as how clearly you can see the non-perfect image.

2.       Zoom is another important consideration with digital cameras. First is the optical zoom, which relies on the lens itself to magnify the light coming in so that the image at a distance appears larger and closer in the final image and second is the digital zoom that takes the final image and magnifies it after the fact. With this in mind an optical zoom is much more important than a digital zoom and larger is not always better.

Problems With Buying a Canon Digital Rebel XTi

Don't do it. At least not till you've finished reading. I know, you've been researching the Canon Digital Rebel XTi, for weeks, or even months before getting here. And, I'm sure you've read umpteen glowing reviews, recommendations and five star ratings heaping wonderful praise on the Digital Rebel XTi. Many of those were sincere I'm sure. But, it's important to examine the flaws as well. That way you can make an informed decision and be confident your getting the best camera for you.

First of all, lets look at your own skill level as a photographer. If your like many perspective Rebel XTi purchasers, all the cameras you've owned in the past, have been basic point and shoot cameras. You've probably never messed with the exposure settings, ISO settings or even gave a second thought to something like burst mode, or f-stop. While the XTi does give you the ability to continue shooting pictures that way, it would be a mistake to do so. Photos taken with the XTi using the default factory auto settings tend to be quite underexposed. Not something you would expect from a $600 camera. Bottom line is, don't assume the Rebel will take better pictures just because it's a better camera . . . your going to have to upgrade your skills as a photographer to get better pictures.

Taking pictures in burst mode on your Rebel (or any camera) is one way to hedge your odds of getting at least one good picture. Professional photographers do it all the time. Your going to be somewhat limited when doing that with the Rebel. It tends to freeze after taking twenty or so pictures. If the flash is not in use, then this shouldn't be an issue. But, if it is, the Rebel does it to protect the flash. Really no way around it, it works that way by design.

Don't count on using the LCD screen for taking your pictures. It's a non-option with the Rebel XTi. You'll have to stick with the optical viewfinder. It's what the pros are used to, and the XTi comes from a long line of predecessors catering to that market. Expect that to change in the future as technology advances, and manufacturers (Canon and others) bow to consumer pressure.

Well, that's about it. Just a few problems, but some you should be aware of. Some other SLR cameras will have the same problems, and others wont. What's important, is to give careful consideration to how plan to use your camera. That's the main thing, and should pretty much guarantee you get the perfect camera for you.

Why Buy A Canon PowerShot A460 Digital Camera?

What's the best reason for buying a digital camera? They say, there are only two big reasons why people buy anything. The first is to avoid pain, and the second is to gain pleasure. The A460 looks like a bit of a throw back to my original digital camera. A Canon PowerShot S40 (circa 2001). The small LCD 2 inch LCD screen, and the sliding lens cap / power switch are almost identical designs. Not that there's anything wrong with that, I still use my S40. It's got some nice features that seem to be missing on many of todays digital cameras. Decent rechargeables, and a solid / sturdy feeling body. The one thing that has changed over the years, is image quality.

Considering, that the A460 only goes to a maximum of ISO 400, you would think that photos taken would be fairly noise free. In reality, image noise seems to be a step behind the competing products. ISO 100 images from the PowerShot A460 seem like they were shot at 200 or 400 setting. Things have improved over the years with image noise reduction in most camera models, but unfortunately the A460 hasn't quite kept up.

Another piece of new technology missing from the A460, is image stabilization. Image stabilization is pretty common fare on even the most basic of digital cameras these days. It's nice for anyone with shaky hands. Even for those with a rock solid grip, image stabilization can make the difference between a perfect shot, and one that's just a bit too blurry even for PhotoShop.

If your still intent on buying a PowerShot A460, here's a couple other considerations to keep in mind:

- flash recharge time is excruciatingly slow

- the zoom control buttons are shared with other functions

- movie are shot at 10 fps VGA or 30fps at QVGA

- a bit too big to fit in your pants

If I was feeling a bit nostalgic, I might just buy a Canon A460 for the right price. Otherwise, I'd have to take a pass. If I was writing this piece a few years ago, my recommendation might be different. But I'm not. Fear not though gentle reader, as there are more digital cameras at great prices available then your dog could shake a stick at. Keep looking, you'll find value for your money.

Digital Camera Megapixels - Who Needs Them?

The camera industry promotes megapixel ratings as though they are a measure of photo quality, and lots of customers fall for it. Every time a manufacturer brings out a higher megapixel camera, some people just have to have it!

Megapixels measure the maximum size of each photo. For example, a six-megapixel camera captures pictures made up of six million tiny dots, a 12-megapixel is made up of 12 million dots - and so on.

In reality, there are really bad twelve-megapixel images, just as there are fantastic six-megapixel shots.

And of course, more megapixels means you have to buy bigger, more expensive memory cards to hold them!

Megapixels are something to consider only in a couple of circumstances:

a) when you want to make giant prints (20-by-30-inch posters, for example)

b)when you want the facility to crop out a large part of a photograph to isolate the main subject, while still leaving enough pixels to make reasonably sized prints.

But if you don't edit your shots and don't need them bigger than A4, there's no need to go megapixal crazy. Six megapixels will do the job really well.

It's worth noting that large files take a long time to download, so photos intended purely for display on the computer (the Web, e-mail, slideshows) - need very few pixels.

So, before you rush out to buy the very latest all-singing, all-dancing digital camera, take a moment or two and really ask yourself what your needs are. If it's gallery quality prints, then go for the highest megapixel you can. But if you are taking product shots for Ebay, save yourself a bundle and keep it simple!

Whether you go the feature/function route or not, there are 7 insider tips that can help save you money and avoid buying the wrong digital camera for your purposes.

Tip #1: How to Get the Best Prices on Digital Cameras

Wherever you are in the investigation/buying process, eventually you get to this step. If you want to buy a digital camera, the best prices are on the internet. Whether you've purchased anything on the internet or not, there are certain INTERNET BUYING STRATEGIES that will save you money, time, and aggravation.

• When purchasing ANYTHING through the internet, only consider the ENTIRE cost of the "digital camera + tax + shipping," NOT just the price of the digital camera. This is the only way to compare "apples to apples."
  
• Once you find the best ENTIRE cost, do not immediately buy it from that vendor! There are key INTERNET questions to answer:
  
• Is the digital camera in stock? There is often a mysterious correlation between the cheapest digital camera prices and cameras being OUT OF STOCK. You don't want to order your digital camera and then have it sit on backorder for 3 months, do you?
  
• Does your Nikon (Minolta, Canon, etc.) come with a USA warranty or is it what's called "grey goods?" You want to verify it's a USA warranty, unless you don't mind having to service it internationally. If it's grey goods, you WILL NOT be able to service it in the US.
  
• When ordering your digital baby, beware of costly add-on accessories that may be needed eventually, but are suggested during this "special order promotion time" at 200% of the normal price.

Tip #2: Professional or Prosumer… Which is Right For You?

Let's begin by clarifying our terms. A professional digital camera is a digital SLR, while a prosumer is basically everything else. In that context, as of the end of 2005, digital SLRs could be purchased for $600 - $8,000 (Canon and Nikon, at least). The key points to consider are:

1. If you plan on shooting night photos or other pictures in low-light situations, many prosumer digital cameras take good quality photographs at ISO 100 or 200. However, to take good pictures in lower light at ISO 400 or 800 will typically require a digital SLR. Otherwise, digital "noise" will probably have too large an impact on picture quality.
   
2. If you plan on taking flash photographs at distances greater than 10-12 feet from your subject, an external flash unit needs to be used. And the only way an external flash unit can be used with your digital camera is to attach it to your camera's hot shoe. Every professional digital camera has a hot shoe. Many prosumers also do, but NOT ALL OF THEM.
   
3. Salespeople often try to sway consumers away from professional digital cameras into prosumer models, saying that the digital SLRs have so many complicated features that they are difficult to use. That is only half correct. Digital SLRs are typically designed to allow consumers to take pictures easily using the more automatic settings OR to use the advanced features when they are comfortable doing so.

Tip #3: What Exactly IS an Affordable Digital Camera?

"Affordable" digital cameras have a tendency of making your budget happy, but disappointing the photographer in you.

1. Don't overlook the ergonomics of the camera. Are the controls easy? Comfortable? How many buttons or levers need to be simultaneously set before getting the result you want?
   
2. If you're upgrading from a less expensive digital camera, don't assume that spending more or having more features will automatically make you happy. Always test out the camera. An affordable digital camera isn't affordable if you wind up not using it!
   
3. The new digital camera is more than likely to operate differently than your older model. Does the new camera have controls that are counter-intuitive? Things like that can frustrate a person enough to not use their digital camera. Better to find out details like these before rather than after the purchase.

Tip #4: Don't be Tricked by Digital and Optical Zoom. Only One Matters.

Here's the bottom line: Optical Zoom is the only thing that's important. Although some salespeople might argue with this, when buying a digital camera, my suggestion is to COMPLETELY IGNORE ALL DIGITAL ZOOM FIGURES. Digital zoom has absolutely no impact on being able to take a photograph of a distant subject by zooming in on it.


The main reason salespeople like to include optical zoom in the equation is because advertising loves to give you the digital camera's "zoom factor." Multiply a 3X Digital Zoom by a 5X Optical Zoom, and you have a 15X Zoom factor... a completely worthless and MISLEADING number!!


Tip #5: Is the Discount Digital Camera a Good or Bad Idea?

The most important consideration when considering a discount digital camera (or any other electronic device, for that matter) is to ask yourself: "WHAT IS MY GOAL?"
Many consumers start by first falling in love with a digital camera and then become pleased or disappointed with its capabilities (usually after they buy it).

I'm proposing something outlandishly radical... go through the process the OPPOSITE WAY. First, ask yourself some basic questions:

1. What do I plan to do with the digital camera (and don't say "take pictures")? What are you most interested in - the occasional family snapshot, landscapes, macro work, heavy flash use, all of the above?
   
2. How much use will it get? (Twice a year, or once a week?)
   
3. What is most important to me: picture quality, camera size, camera weight, durability, telephotos/wide angle lens, etc.?

Based on your responses to these questions, a discount digital camera can be your best choice or a complete waste of money.

A "no-name" discount digital camera can be a logical choice, based on what your photographic goals are. But don't think a $49.95 Brand X camera is going to cost you $49.95! You also have to add in the cost for at least some accessories, such as memory, batteries, bag, and lens protector.


Tip #6: When are Small Digital Cameras the Perfect Choice?

Despite impressions to the contrary, small digital cameras (also referred to as compact digital cameras) are quite popular. They're easy to carry, usually loaded with features, and take respectable photographs.

We need to remember that SMALL DOESN'T MEAN UNDERPOWERED. Some advantages of going tiny are: less bulky, easier to transport, less conspicuous (less likely to "walk off"), and they often compare favorably with larger cameras in the feature and price categories.

Some of the pitfalls of going small include: possible trouble physically operating some of the camera's controls, less likely to support an external flash, and the physical size can limit some of the available features, such as image manipulation.


Tip #7: Megapixels - What's Fact; What's Fiction?

Don't get the idea that megapixels are bad, or irrelevant. This is NOT TRUE. There is one specific area where more megapixels will create better digital photography results. CANON EOS Rebel XSi Digital Camera Reviewed

The CANON EOS Rebel XSi offers two different body designs. An attractive solid black and a less-attractive two-tone silver and black model. Both models comes in a body only or single lens kit with the EF-S 18-55 mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens. The XSI is slightly larger than the XTI, the XSI takes off a couple of ounces, making it 1 pound and 2.5 ounces. The plastic body gives it a feel and appearance of a cheaper brand camera. The grip is not entirely desirable either. The larger 3 inch LCD screen provides some necessary changes to layout control over the XTI model. Almost all the buttons are easily accessible with your fingers, making it ideal for easy picture taking. There is no two-hand operation needed with this camera. With one hand you can fully navigate between changing ISO, white balance, metering and so on. The menu makes navigation very easy.

Regardless of the XSI's pros and cons, it still delivers the best in it's class photo quality, which is quite a surprise, given the high-resolution sensor. One nuisance is the tendency to underexpose photos. You might just need to kick the sharpness settings up a notch to deliver better quality photos. The color accuracy, dynamic range and consistently good noise reduction profile clearly puts this model in front of similar class cameras. This camera also features internal and external flash and the lenses render extremely good edge-to-edge sharpness when taking pictures.

The CANON EOS Rebel XSi will deliver slightly better performance and picture quality than it's competitors, making it a worthwhile consideration. In tests, the XSI just edges past its competition for shooting speeds. It powers to photo in no more than 0.2 seconds. The XSI's JPEG shooting lag is a tad bit longer than it's competitors. The norm is 1.2 seconds between takes in dim conditions. Shot-to-shot time takes about 0.4 seconds for a raw JPEG and adding flash recycling time bumps this time up to only 0.7 seconds.

Let's take a look at some of it's advantages at a glance: Excellent photo quality for it's class and price and a better-than-average shooting speed.

Now let's take a look at some of it's disadvantages: First off, the maximum ISO is 1600 and the camera has a huge spot-for-spot metering response.

Overall, this camera does not stand out for it's feature set or design, but the CANON EOS Rebel XSi does deliver on performance and excelled photo quality. Overall, this camera gets 8 our of 10 stars. The price of this camera ranges from $625-$899.

Face Detection Technology on Digital Cameras Works

Yes, incredible as it sound, this fantastic technology does work. The Face detection technology, available from great manufacturers such as Canon, Pentax, FujiFilm and Sony, uses special and highly technical algorithms to judge the picture while you aim the camera. What is it looking for? I hear you ask, well it is looking for the shapes of human faces. When the digital camera locks onto a face, the camera automatically adjusts both the focus and the exposure to ensure you are provided with the best photo possible from the camera.

You will also be pleased to know that advancements are always being made with this technology, with some manufacturers actually managing to enhance their cameras to scan for a noses ears and chins to give a more comprehensive picture, this can normally work for parties upto 10. In normal circumstances, a scanned face has to cover around 10 percent of the height of the viewfinder LCD, remember that this requirement is important because this stops the camera from trying to focus on potential faces in the background.

The face identification process takes around four one-hundredths of a second, however remember that some manufacturers are better then others. Also note that you can turn off the face detection technology within most of the top of the range digital cameras when you are taking pictures without human subjects, although it is doubtful many people will turn off this feature because in a new report, it has been stated that at least 70% of all pictures taken have a human subject.

Face recognition can also be used for more than just the autofocus. Some cameras capture the location of the identified faces within each photo taken. This lets you zoom in and examine pictures after taking the shot, this is useful if for instance you want to check if everyone in the photo had their eyes open during the shot.

You will also not be surprised to hear, that continuous vast amounts of money is being invested in this type of technology, and in particular into developing these algorithms. The next stage of this technology involves a digital camera remembering a subject and tagging the person appropriately, next time the subject is seen, the camera will automatically tag the subject and adjust setting accordingly.

As for the question about animal faces, unfortunately current technology only focuses on human faces, however because of the love owners have of their pets, we will expect this to be a new addition into future digital camera.

As mentioned there are many high profile manufacturers who include this technology within their digital cameras, so if you are considering making a new purchase, ensure you do your homework and conduct a full comparison of the cameras. Once you have made your choice, enjoy!

Never Buy A Canon PowerShot Pro Series S5 Digital Camera

You may think you've found the perfect digital camera with the Canon Powershot Pro Series S5. Especially if your looking for something more than a basic point and shoot, but something less than a complicated and expense digital SLR. But there's a good chance your wrong. Canon generally makes some pretty nice digital cameras, but for some reason they've experienced some serious design miscues with the PowerShot Pro Series S5.

Image noise is a serious minus in the Pro Series S5 camera. Afraid of bucking a growing consumer trend towards more megapixels, Canon has unfortunately built the S5 with more megapixels than the image sensor can handle. A number of years ago, megapixels was a valid yardstick for measuring value in digital cameras. That time however has passed. Unless your planning on blowing your photographs up to poster size, anything over 5 or 6 megapixels is redundant. Or worse, as in this case, a serious detractor in image quality with the introduction of much too much image noise for a camera in this price range.

Red eye problems should really be a thing of the past in any camera over $200 these days. It seems, that the S5 digital camera, doesn't employ even the most basic red eye preventative tactics (pre-flash) in the red eye battle. The S5 does come with red eye reduction software built it, but it's less than stellar. Depending on the viewing angle of your subject, it may or may not remove the red eye artifact successfully.

Cheaper point and shoots, and even some more expensive point and shoots often have a problem with blurred or soft corners on their photographs. I wouldn't expect to find that in a Pro Series Digital series camera, but there it is. If your main subject is generally framed in the center of the photo, this shouldn't be a problem. If however you like to shoot a lot of landscape and big scenery photos, you won't be happy with the results.

A few other issues with the Powershot S5 include:

- conspicuously absent auto focus assist

- no RAW or TIFF mode for the after photo editing fans

- gobbles up four double AA batteries at a time

- an old fashioned lens cap (sure to be lost, or left on)

Not to worry, from here things just get better. There's an abundance of nicer cameras competing for your dollars in this category. Including the SX100IS, and Pro Series S3 . . . both from Canon. Canon generally make great cameras, just not this time.
